Tools/Metal Work

Your choice of tools is a spectacularly individual choice. There is little agreement about which types of instruments are actually needed to successfully complete a model. We aim to present a representative selection from the wide array of materials about tools, their proper care & maintenance.

Novice builders often make do with non-specific items gathered from around the house (i.e., tweezers, cutting boards, utility knives, curling irons, and hairpins). The more experienced modeler may choose from a variety of available materials including dentist’s tools, curved-blades, straight-blades, wood formers and steamers, specialized marking pins and miniature hand drills.

  • Compact Lathe, 2nd edition. Bray, Stan (2004). Swanley: Special Interest Model Books. 187 p. illus.

  • Tabletop machining: A basic approach to making small parts on miniature machine tools. Martin, Joe & Libuse, Craig, V. (1998). Vista: Sherline Products, Inc. 238 p. Illus.
